           Alittledoorwithabigcemeterycrossofwhitewoodpaintedblackatthetopwasopenedwithdifficulty,andtheportermadehimenteradarklowroom,whosewhitewashedwallsweredecoratedwithtwobigpicturesblackenedbyage.InthisroomJulienwasleftalone.Hewasoverwhelmed.Hisheartwasbeatingviolently.Hewouldhavebeenhappytohaveventuredtocry.Asilenceofdeathreignedoverthewholehouse.

           Attheendofaquarterofanhour,whichseemedawholedaytohim,thesinisterlookingporterreappearedonthethresholdofadoorattheotherendoftheroom,andwithoutvouchsafingaword,signedtohimtoadvance.Heenteredintoaroomevenlargerthanthefirst,andverybadlylighted.Thewallsalsowerewhitened,buttherewasnofurniture.OnlyinacornernearthedoorJuliensawashepassedawhitewoodenbed,twostrawchairs,andalittlepinewoodarmchairwithoutanycushions.Heperceivedattheotherendoftheroom,nearasmallwindowwithyellowpanesdecoratedwithbadlykeptflowervases,amanseatedatatable,andcoveredwithadilapidatedcassock.Heappearedtobeinatemper,andtookoneaftertheotheranumberoflittlesquaresofpaper,whichhearrangedonhistableafterhehadwrittensomewordsonthem.HedidnotnoticeJulien’spresence.Thelatterdidnotmove,butkeptstandingnearthecentreoftheroomintheplacewheretheporter,whohadgoneoutandshutthedoor,hadlefthim.

           Tenminutespassedinthisway:thebadlydressedmankeptonwritingallthetime.Julien’semotionandterrorweresogreatthathethoughthewasonthepointoffalling.
