           Itwasnecessary,however,toobeyMadamedeRênal’sinjunctionandbepresentatseveraldinnersofthesamekind.Julienwasthefashion;hewasforgivenhisGuardofHonouruniform,orratherthatindiscretionwastherealcauseofhissuccesses.SoontheonlyquestioninVerrièreswaswhetherM.deRênalorM.thedirectoroftheworkhousewouldbethevictorinthestruggleforthecleveryoungman.Thesegentlemenformed,togetherwithM.Maslon,atriumviratewhichhadtyrannisedoverthetownforanumberofyears.Peoplewerejealousofthemayor,andtheLiberalshadgoodcauseforcomplaint,but,afterall,hewasnobleandbornforasuperiorposition,whileM.Valenod’sfatherhadnotlefthimsixhundredfrancsayear.Hiscareerhadnecessitatedatransitionfrompityingtheshabbygreensuitwhichhadbeensonotoriousinhisyouth,toenvyingtheNormanhorses,hisgoldchains,hisParisclothes,hiswholepresentprosperity.

           Julienthoughtthathehaddiscoveredonehonestmaninthewhirlpoolofthisnovelworld.HewasageometristnamedGros,andhadthereputationofbeingaJacobin.Julien,whohadvowedtosaynothingbutthatwhichhedisbelievedhimself,wasobligedtowatchhimselfcarefullywhenspeakingtoM.Gros.HereceivedbigpacketsofexercisesfromVergy.Hewasadvisedtovisithisfatherfrequently,andhefulfilledhisunpleasantduty.Inawordhewaspatchinghisreputationtogetherprettywell,whenhewasthoroughlysurprisedtofindhimselfwokenuponemorningbytwohandsheldoverhiseyes.
