JulienthoughtallthetimeofMadamedeRênal.Hisdistrustmadehimonlysusceptibletothoseassociationswhicharecalledupbytheiropposites,buthewasthenaffectedtothevergeofbreakingdown.Thistendencywasincreasedbythesightofthehouseofthedirectoroftheworkhouse.Hewasshownoverit.Everythinginitwasnewandmagnificent,andhewastoldthepriceofeveryarticleoffurniture.ButJuliendetectedacertainelementofsordidness,whichsmackedofstolenmoneyintothebargain.Everybodyinit,downtotheservants,hadtheairofsettinghisfaceinadvanceagainstcontempt.
