           HeaskedforthehonourofbeingintroducedtoMadameValenod.Shewasdressingandwasunabletoreceivehim.BywayofcompensationhehadtheprivilegeofwitnessingthetoiletofM.thedirectoroftheworkhouse.TheysubsequentlywentintotheapartmentofMadameValenod,whointroducedherchildrentohimwithtearsinhereyes.ThisladywasoneofthemostimportantinVerrières,hadabigfacelikeaman’s,onwhichshehadputrougeinhonourofthisgreatfunction.Shedisplayedallthematernalpathosofwhichshewascapable.
