Pickwickwaswrong,andiftheythoughttheevidenceofMrs.Cluppinsworthyofcredencetheywouldbelieveit,and,iftheydidn’t,why,theywouldn’t.Iftheyweresatisfiedthatabreachofpromiseofmarriagehadbeencommittedtheywouldfindfortheplaintiffwithsuchdamagesastheythoughtproper;andif,ontheotherhand,itappearedtothemthatnopromiseofmarriagehadeverbeengiven,theywouldfindforthedefendantwithnodamagesatall.Thejurythenretiredtotheirprivateroomtotalkthematterover,andthejudgeretiredtoHISprivateroom,torefreshhimselfwithamuttonchopandaglassofsherry.Ananxiousquarterofahourelapsed;thejurycameback;thejudgewasfetchedin.Mr.Pickwickputonhisspectacles,andgazedattheforemanwithanagitatedcountenanceandaquickly-beatingheart.
‘Gentlemen,’saidtheindividualinblack,‘areyouallagreeduponyourverdict?’
‘Weare,’repliedtheforeman.

Mr.Pickwicktookoffhisspectacles,carefullywipedtheglasses,foldedthemintotheircase,andputtheminhispocket;then,havingdrawnonhisgloveswithgreatnicety,andstaredattheforemanallthewhile,hemechanicallyfollowedMr.Perkerandthebluebagoutofcourt.
