SerjeantSnubbinthenaddressedthejuryonbehalfofthedefendant;andaverylongandaveryemphaticaddresshedelivered,inwhichhebestowedthehighestpossibleeulogiumsontheconductandcharacterofMr.Pickwick;butinasmuchasourreadersarefarbetterabletoformacorrectestimateofthatgentleman’smeritsanddeserts,thanSerjeantSnubbincouldpossiblybe,wedonotfeelcalledupontoenteratanylengthintothelearnedgentleman’sobservations.Heattemptedtoshowthattheletterswhichhadbeenexhibited,merelyrelatedtoMr.Pickwick’sdinner,ortothepreparationsforreceivinghiminhisapartmentsonhisreturnfromsomecountryexcursion.Itissufficienttoaddingeneralterms,thathedidthebesthecouldforMr.Pickwick;andthebest,aseverybodyknows,ontheinfallibleauthorityoftheoldadage,coulddonomore.
Mr.JusticeStareleighsummedup,intheold-establishedandmostapprovedform.Hereadasmuchofhisnotestothejuryashecoulddecipheronsoshortanotice,andmaderunning–commentsontheevidenceashewentalong.IfMrs.Bardellwereright,itwasperfectlyclearthatMr.
