Averyoldlady,inaloftycapandfadedsilkgown—nolessapersonagethanMr.Wardle’smother—occupiedthepostofhonourontheright-handcornerofthechimney-piece;andvariouscertificatesofherhavingbeenbroughtupinthewaysheshouldgowhenyoung,andofhernothavingdepartedfromitwhenold,ornamentedthewalls,intheformofsamplersofancientdate,worstedlandscapesofequalantiquity,andcrimsonsilktea-kettleholdersofamoremodernperiod.Theaunt,thetwoyoungladies,andMr.Wardle,eachvyingwiththeotherinpayingzealousandunremittingattentionstotheoldlady,crowdedroundhereasy-chair,oneholdingherear-trumpet,anotheranorange,andathirdasmelling-bottle,whileafourthwasbusilyengagedinpattingandpunchingthepillowswhichwerearrangedforhersupport.
