Itwasthemostintenselyinterestingthing,toobservethemannerinwhichMr.Pickwickperformedhisshareintheceremony;towatchthetortureofanxietywithwhichheviewedthepersonbehind,gaininguponhimattheimminenthazardoftrippinghimup;toseehimgraduallyexpendthepainfulforcehehadputonatfirst,andturnslowlyroundontheslide,withhisfacetowardsthepointfromwhichhehadstarted;tocontemplatetheplayfulsmilewhichmantledonhisfacewhenhehadaccomplishedthedistance,andtheeagernesswithwhichheturnedroundwhenhehaddoneso,andranafterhispredecessor,hisblackgaiterstrippingpleasantlythroughthesnow,andhiseyesbeamingcheerfulnessandgladnessthroughhisspectacles.Andwhenhewasknockeddown(whichhappenedupontheaverageeverythirdround),itwasthemostinvigoratingsightthatcanpossiblybeimagined,tobeholdhimgatheruphishat,gloves,andhandkerchief,withaglowingcountenance,andresumehisstationintherank,withanardourandenthusiasmthatnothingCouldabate.
