           ‘Tryitnow,’saidWardle.

           ‘Oh,do,please,Mr.Pickwick!’criedalltheladies.

           ‘Ishouldbeveryhappytoaffordyouanyamusement,’repliedMr.Pickwick,‘butIhaven’tdonesuchathingthesethirtyyears.’

           ‘Pooh!pooh!Nonsense!’saidWardle,draggingoffhisskateswiththeimpetuositywhichcharacterisedallhisproceedings.‘Here;I’llkeepyoucompany;comealong!’Andawaywentthegood-temperedoldfellowdowntheslide,witharapiditywhichcameverycloseuponMr.Weller,andbeatthefatboyalltonothing.

           Mr.Pickwickpaused,considered,pulledoffhisglovesandputtheminhishat;tooktwoorthreeshortruns,baulkedhimselfasoften,andatlasttookanotherrun,andwentslowlyandgravelydowntheslide,withhisfeetaboutayardandaquarterapart,amidstthegratifiedshoutsofallthespectators.
