Hehadloiteredabout,forsometime,whenhefoundhimselfinaretiredspot—akindofcourtyardofvenerableappearance—whichhediscoveredhadnootheroutletthantheturningbywhichhehadentered.Hewasaboutretracinghissteps,whenhewassuddenlytransfixedtothespotbyasuddenappearance;andthemodeandmannerofthisappearance,wenowproceedtorelate.
Mr.SamuelWellerhadbeenstaringupattheoldbrickhousesnowandthen,inhisdeepabstraction,bestowingawinkuponsomehealthy-lookingservantgirlasshedrewupablind,orthrewopenabedroomwindow,whenthegreengateofagardenatthebottomoftheyardopened,andamanhavingemergedtherefrom,closedthegreengateverycarefullyafterhim,andwalkedbrisklytowardstheveryspotwhereMr.Wellerwasstanding.
Now,takingthis,asanisolatedfact,unaccompaniedbyanyattendantcircumstances,therewasnothingveryextraordinaryinit;becauseinmanypartsoftheworldmendocomeoutofgardens,closegreengatesafterthem,andevenwalkbrisklyaway,withoutattractinganyparticularshareofpublicobservation.Itisclear,therefore,thattheremusthavebeensomethingintheman,orinhismanner,orboth,toattractMr.Weller’sparticularnotice.Whethertherewas,ornot,wemustleavethereadertodetermine,whenwehavefaithfullyrecordedthebehaviouroftheindividualinquestion.
