In which Mr. Samuel Weller begins to devote his Energies to the Return Match between himself and Mr.

           

           Whenthemanhadshutthegreengateafterhim,hewalked,aswehavesaidtwicealready,withabriskpaceupthecourtyard;buthenosoonercaughtsightofMr.Wellerthanhefaltered,andstopped,asifuncertain,forthemoment,whatcoursetoadopt.Asthegreengatewasclosedbehindhim,andtherewasnootheroutletbuttheoneinfront,however,hewasnotlonginperceivingthathemustpassMr.SamuelWellertogetaway.Hethereforeresumedhisbriskpace,andadvanced,staringstraightbeforehim.Themostextraordinarythingaboutthemanwas,thathewascontortinghisfaceintothemostfearfulandastonishinggrimacesthateverwerebeheld.Nature’shandiworkneverwasdisguisedwithsuchextraordinaryartificialcarving,asthemanhadoverlaidhiscountenancewithinonemoment.

           ‘Well!’saidMr.Wellertohimself,asthemanapproached.‘Thisisweryodd.Icouldha’sworeitwashim.’

           Upcametheman,andhisfacebecamemorefrightfullydistortedthanever,ashedrewnearer.

           ‘Icouldtakemyoathtothat‘ereblackhairandmulberrysuit,’saidMr.Weller;‘onlyIneverseesuchafaceasthatafore.’

           AsMr.Wellersaidthis,theman’sfeaturesassumedanunearthlytwinge,perfectlyhideous.HewasobligedtopassverynearSam,however,andthescrutinisingglanceofthatgentlemanenabledhimtodetect,underalltheseappallingtwistsoffeature,somethingtoolikethesmalleyesofMr.JobTrottertobeeasilymistaken.
