           Mr.Jingleassented,andthequartettewalkedintoanemptyapartment.

           ‘Now,sir,’saidthelittleman,ashecarefullyclosedthedoor,‘istherenowayofaccommodatingthismatterstepthisway,sir,foramomentintothiswindow,Sir,wherewecanbealonethere,sir,there,praysitdown,sir.Now,mydearSir,betweenyouandI,weknowverywell,mydearSir,thatyouhaverunoffwiththisladyforthesakeofhermoney.Don’tfrown,Sir,don’tfrown;Isay,betweenyouandI,WEknowit.Wearebothmenoftheworld,andWEknowverywellthatourfriendshere,arenoteh?’

           Mr.Jingle’sfacegraduallyrelaxed;andsomethingdistantlyresemblingawinkquiveredforaninstantinhislefteye.

           ‘Verygood,verygood,’saidthelittleman,observingtheimpressionhehadmade.‘Now,thefactis,thatbeyondafewhundreds,theladyhaslittleornothingtillthedeathofhermotherfineoldlady,mydearSir.’

           ‘OLD,’saidMr.Jinglebrieflybutemphatically.

           ‘Why,yes,’saidtheattorney,withaslightcough.‘Youareright,mydearSir,sheisratherold.
