A Discovery and a Chase

           Pickwickdrewhiscoatcloserabouthim,coiledhimselfmoresnuglyupintothecornerofthechaise,andfellintoasoundsleep,fromwhichhewasonlyawakenedbythestoppingofthevehicle,thesoundofthehostler’sbell,andaloudcryof‘Horsesondirectly!’

           Buthereanotherdelayoccurred.Theboysweresleepingwithsuchmysterioussoundness,thatittookfiveminutesa-piecetowakethem.Thehostlerhadsomehoworothermislaidthekeyofthestable,andevenwhenthatwasfound,twosleepyhelpersputthewrongharnessonthewronghorses,andthewholeprocessofharnessinghadtobegonethroughafresh.HadMr.Pickwickbeenalone,thesemultipliedobstacleswouldhavecompletelyputanendtothepursuitatonce,butoldWardlewasnottobesoeasilydaunted;andhelaidabouthimwithsuchheartygood-will,cuffingthisman,andpushingthat;strappingabucklehere,andtakinginalinkthere,thatthechaisewasreadyinamuchshortertimethancouldreasonablyhavebeenexpected,undersomanydifficulties.

           Theyresumedtheirjourney;andcertainlytheprospectbeforethemwasbynomeansencouraging.Thestagewasfifteenmileslong,thenightwasdark,thewindhigh,andtherainpouringintorrents.Itwasimpossibletomakeanygreatwayagainstsuchobstaclesunited;itwashardupononeo’clockalready;andnearlytwohourswereconsumedingettingtotheendofthestage.Here,however,anobjectpresenteditself,whichrekindledtheirhopes,andreanimatedtheirdroopingspirits.
