           ‘Whendidthischaisecomein?’criedoldWardle,leapingoutofhisownvehicle,andpointingtoonecoveredwithwetmud,whichwasstandingintheyard.

           ‘Notaquarterofanhourago,sir,’repliedthehostler,towhomthequestionwasaddressed.‘Ladyandgentleman?’inquiredWardle,almostbreathlesswithimpatience.

           ‘Yes,sir.’

           ‘Tallgentlemandress-coatlonglegsthinbody?’

           ‘Yes,sir.’

           ‘Elderlyladythinfaceratherskinnyeh?’

           ‘Yes,sir.’

           ‘Byheavens,it’sthecouple,Pickwick,’exclaimedtheoldgentleman.

           ‘Wouldhavebeenherebefore,’saidthehostler,‘buttheybrokeatrace.’

           ‘’Tisthem!’saidWardle,‘itis,byJove!Chaise-and-fourinstantly!Weshallcatchthemyetbeforetheyreachthenextstage.Aguineaa-piece,boys-bealivetherebustleaboutthere’sgoodfellows.’

           Andwithsuchadmonitionsasthese,theoldgentlemanranupanddowntheyard,andbustledtoandfro,inastateofexcitementwhichcommunicateditselftoMr.Pickwickalso;andundertheinfluenceofwhich,thatgentlemangothimselfintocomplicatedentanglementswithharness,andmixedupwithhorsesandwheelsofchaises,inthemostsurprisingmanner,firmlybelievingthatbysodoinghewasmateriallyforwardingthepreparationsfortheirresumingtheirjourney.
