           Meanwhilethechaiseproceeded,withoutanyslackeningofpace,towardstheconclusionofthestage.Themoon,asWardlehadforetold,wasrapidlyonthewane;largetiersofdark,heavyclouds,whichhadbeengraduallyoverspreadingtheskyforsometimepast,nowformedoneblackmassoverhead;andlargedropsofrainwhichpatteredeverynowandthenagainstthewindowsofthechaise,seemedtowarnthetravellersoftherapidapproachofastormynight.Thewind,too,whichwasdirectlyagainstthem,sweptinfuriousgustsdownthenarrowroad,andhowleddismallythroughthetreeswhichskirtedthepathway.Mr.
