Mr.Pott’sfeaturesassumedsomuchadditionalgrandeurattherecollectionofthepowerandresearchdisplayedinthelearnedeffusionsinquestion,thatsomeminuteselapsedbeforeMr.Pickwickfeltemboldenedtorenewtheconversation;atlength,astheeditor’scountenancegraduallyrelaxedintoitscustomaryexpressionofmoralsupremacy,heventuredtoresumethediscoursebyasking—
‘Isitfairtoinquirewhatgreatobjecthasbroughtyousofarfromhome?’
‘Thatobjectwhichactuatesandanimatesmeinallmygiganticlabours,Sir,’repliedPott,withacalmsmile:‘mycountry’sgood.’‘Isupposeditwassomepublicmission,’observedMr.Pickwick.
