           Igaveagasp.Alittletomyleft,whereforthemomentIhadoverlookedit,wasalongnarrowpit,andbyit,facedownwards,wasthebodyofaman!Foramoment,myheartgaveaterribleleap,andIhadawildfancythatthetragedyhadbeenduplicated.Butthecommissarydispelledmyillusionbymovingforwardwithasharpexclamationofannoyance:

           “Whathavemypolicebeenabout?Theyhadstrictorderstoallownooneneartheplacewithoutpropercredentials!”

           Themanonthegroundturnedhisheadoverhisshoulder.

           “ButIhavepropercredentials,”heremarked,androseslowlytohisfeet.

           “MydearM.Giraud,”criedthecommissary.
