           Iwasdistractedfrommythoughtsbythesoundofvoicescloseathand.InasecondortwoIrealizedthattheycame,notfromthegardenIwasin,butfromtheadjoininggardenoftheVillaMarguerite,andthattheywereapproachingrapidly.Agirl’svoicewasspeaking,avoicethatIrecognizedasthatofthebeautifulMarthe.

           “Chéri,”shewassaying,“isitreallytrue?Areallourtroublesover.”

           “Youknowit,Marthe,”JackRenauldreplied.“Nothingcanpartusnow,beloved.Thelastobstacletoourunionisremoved.Nothingcantakeyoufromme.”

           “Nothing?”thegirlmurmured.“Oh,Jack,Jack—Iamafraid.”

           Ihadmovedtodepart,realizingthatIwasquiteunintentionallyeavesdropping.AsIrosetomyfeet,Icaughtsightofthemthroughagapinthehedge.Theystoodtogetherfacingme,theman’sarmroundthegirl,hiseyeslookingintohers.
