           Onthe15thofMaywewereattheextremesouthoftheBankofNewfoundland.Thisbankconsistsofalluvia,orlargeheapsoforganicmatter,broughteitherfromtheEquatorbytheGulfStream,orfromtheNorthPolebythecounter-currentofcoldwaterwhichskirtstheAmericancoast.Therealsoareheapedupthoseerraticblockswhicharecarriedalongbythebrokenice;andcloseby,avastcharnel-houseofmolluscs,whichperishherebymillions.ThedepthoftheseaisnotgreatatNewfoundlandnotmorethansomehundredsoffathoms;buttowardsthesouthisadepressionof1,500fathoms.TheretheGulfStreamwidens.Itlosessomeofitsspeedandsomeofitstemperature,butitbecomesasea.
