Thethermometerthenstoodat7°outside.CaptainNemotookmetothegalleys,wherethevastdistillatorymachinesstoodthatfurnishedthedrinkablewaterbyevaporation.Theyfilledthesewithwater,andalltheelectricheatfromthepileswasthrownthroughthewormsbathedintheliquid.Inafewminutesthiswaterreached100°.Itwasdirectedtowardsthepumps,whilefreshwaterreplaceditinproportion.Theheatdevelopedbythetroughswassuchthatcoldwater,drawnupfromtheseaafteronlyhavinggonethroughthemachines,cameboilingintothebodyofthepump.Theinjectionwasbegun,andthreehoursafterthethermometermarked6°belowzerooutside.Onedegreewasgained.Twohourslaterthethermometeronlymarked4°.
