           Wehadnowarrivedonthefirstplatform,whereothersurprisesawaitedme.Beforeuslaysomepicturesqueruins,whichbetrayedthehandofmanandnotthatoftheCreator.Therewerevastheapsofstone,amongstwhichmightbetracedthevagueandshadowyformsofcastlesandtemples,clothedwithaworldofblossomingzoophytes,andoverwhich,insteadofivy,sea-weedandfucusthrewathickvegetablemantle.Butwhatwasthisportionoftheglobewhichhadbeenswallowedbycataclysms?
