           Thereitcollectednumerousrelicsofthewreckironutensils,anchors,pulley-strops,swivel-guns,an18lb.shot,fragmentsofastronomicalinstruments,apieceofcrownwork,andabronzeclock,bearingthisinscription"Bazinm’afait,"themarkofthefoundryofthearsenalatBrestabout1785.Therecouldbenofurtherdoubt.

           Dillon,havingmadeallinquiries,stayedintheunluckyplacetillOctober.ThenhequittedVanikoro,anddirectedhiscoursetowardsNewZealand;putintoCalcutta,7thApril,1828,andreturnedtoFrance,wherehewaswarmlywelcomedbyCharlesX.

           Butatthesametime,withoutknowingDillon’smovements,Dumontd’Urvillehadalreadysetouttofindthesceneofthewreck.AndtheyhadlearnedfromawhalerthatsomemedalsandacrossofSt.LouishadbeenfoundinthehandsofsomesavagesofLouisiadeandNewCaledonia.
