           WehadquittedtheNautilusaboutanhourandahalf.Itwasnearnoon;Iknewbytheperpendicularityofthesun’srays,whichwerenolongerrefracted.Themagicalcoloursdisappearedbydegrees,andtheshadesofemeraldandsapphirewereeffaced.Wewalkedwitharegularstep,whichranguponthegroundwithastonishingintensity;theslightestnoisewastransmittedwithaquicknesstowhichtheearisunaccustomedontheearth;indeed,waterisabetterconductorofsoundthanair,intheratiooffourtoone.Atthisperiodtheearthslopeddownwards;thelighttookauniformtint.Wewereatadepthofahundredandfiveyardsandtwentyinches,undergoingapressureofsixatmospheres.
