           AverylittlequietreflectionwasenoughtosatisfyEmmaastothenatureofheragitationonhearingthisnewsofFrankChurchill.Shewassoonconvincedthatitwasnotforherselfshewasfeelingatallapprehensiveorembarrassed;itwasforhim.Herownattachmenthadreallysubsidedintoamerenothing;itwasnotworththinkingofbutifhe,whohadundoubtedlybeenalwayssomuchthemostinloveofthetwo,weretobereturningwiththesamewarmthofsentimentwhichhehadtakenaway,itwouldbeverydistressing.Ifaseparationoftwomonthsshouldnothavecooledhim,thereweredangersandevilsbeforeher:—cautionforhimandforherselfwouldbenecessary.Shedidnotmeantohaveherownaffectionsentangledagain,anditwouldbeincumbentonhertoavoidanyencouragementofhis.

           Shewishedshemightbeabletokeephimfromanabsolutedeclaration.Thatwouldbesoverypainfulaconclusionoftheirpresentacquaintance!andyet,shecouldnothelpratheranticipatingsomethingdecisive.Shefeltasifthespringwouldnotpasswithoutbringingacrisis,anevent,asomethingtoalterherpresentcomposedandtranquilstate.
