Mrs.GoddardwasthemistressofaSchool—notofaseminary,oranestablishment,oranythingwhichprofessed,inlongsentencesofrefinednonsense,tocombineliberalacquirementswithelegantmorality,uponnewprinciplesandnewsystems—andwhereyoungladiesforenormouspaymightbescrewedoutofhealthandintovanity—butareal,honest,old-fashionedBoarding-school,whereareasonablequantityofaccomplishmentsweresoldatareasonableprice,andwheregirlsmightbesenttobeoutoftheway,andscramblethemselvesintoalittleeducation,withoutanydangerofcomingbackprodigies.Mrs.Goddard’sschoolwasinhighrepute—andverydeservedly;forHighburywasreckonedaparticularlyhealthyspot:shehadanamplehouseandgarden,gavethechildrenplentyofwholesomefood,letthemrunaboutagreatdealinthesummer,andinwinterdressedtheirchilblainswithherownhands.Itwasnowonderthatatrainoftwentyyoungcouplenowwalkedafterhertochurch.
