           PerhapsshemighthavepassedovermorehadhismannersbeenflatteringtoIsabella’ssister,buttheywereonlythoseofacalmlykindbrotherandfriend,withoutpraiseandwithoutblindness;buthardlyanydegreeofpersonalcomplimentcouldhavemadeherregardlessofthatgreatestfaultofallinhereyeswhichhesometimesfellinto,thewantofrespectfulforbearancetowardsherfather.Therehehadnotalwaysthepatiencethatcouldhavebeenwished.Mr.Woodhouse’speculiaritiesandfidgetinessweresometimesprovokinghimtoarationalremonstranceorsharpretortequallyill-bestowed.Itdidnotoftenhappen;forMr.JohnKnightleyhadreallyagreatregardforhisfather-in-law,andgenerallyastrongsenseofwhatwasduetohim;butitwastoooftenforEmma’scharity,especiallyastherewasallthepainofapprehensionfrequentlytobeendured,thoughtheoffencecamenot.Thebeginning,however,ofeveryvisitdisplayednonebuttheproperestfeelings,andthisbeingofnecessitysoshortmightbehopedtopassawayinunsulliedcordiality.TheyhadnotbeenlongseatedandcomposedwhenMr.Woodhouse,withamelancholyshakeoftheheadandasigh,calledhisdaughter’sattentiontothesadchangeatHartfieldsinceshehadbeentherelast.
