Two Recalls

           ItwassetforthintheprogrammeofthistropicvaudevillethatitwouldbemadeknownwhyShortyO’Day,oftheColumbiaDetectiveAgency,losthisposition.AlsothatSmithshouldcomeagaintotelluswhatmysteryhefollowedthatnightontheshoresofAnchuriawhenhestrewedsomanycigarstumpsaroundthecocoanutpalmduringhislonelynightvigilonthebeach.Thesethingswerepromised;butabiggerthingyetremainstobeaccomplished—theclearingupofaseemingwrongthathasbeendoneaccordingtothearrayofchronicledfacts(truthfullysetforth)thathavebeenpresented.Andonevoice,speaking,shalldothesethreethings.

           TwomensatonastringerofaNorthRiverpierintheCityofNewYork.Asteamerfromthetropicshadbeguntounloadbananasandorangesonthepier.Nowandthenabananaortwowouldfallfromanoverripebunch,andoneofthetwomenwouldshambleforward,seizethefruitandreturntoshareitwithhiscompanion.

           Oneofthemenwasintheultimatestageofdeterioration.Asfarasrainandwindandsuncouldwreckthegarmentshewore,ithadbeendone.Inhispersontheravagesofdrinkwereasplainlyvisible.Andyet,uponhishigh-bridged,rubicundnosewasjauntilyperchedapairofshiningandflawlessgold-rimmedglasses.
