So,whiletheywerewalkingthroughtheforest,theTinWoodmantoldthefollowingstory:
"Iwasbornthesonofawoodmanwhochoppeddowntreesintheforestandsoldthewoodforaliving. WhenIgrewup,Itoobecameawoodchopper,andaftermyfatherdiedItookcareofmyoldmotheraslongasshelived. ThenImadeupmymindthatinsteadoflivingaloneIwouldmarry,sothatImightnotbecomelonely.
"TherewasoneoftheMunchkingirlswhowassobeautifulthatIsoongrewtoloveherwithallmyheart. She,onherpart,promisedtomarrymeassoonasIcouldearnenoughmoneytobuildabetterhouseforher;soIsettoworkharderthanever. Butthegirllivedwithanoldwomanwhodidnotwanthertomarryanyone,forshewassolazyshewishedthegirltoremainwithheranddothecookingandthehousework. SotheoldwomanwenttotheWickedWitchoftheEast,andpromisedhertwosheepandacowifshewouldpreventthemarriage.
