The Council with the Munchkins

           WhenDorothywasleftaloneshebegantofeelhungry. Soshewenttothecupboardandcutherselfsomebread,whichshespreadwithbutter. ShegavesometoToto,andtakingapailfromtheshelfshecarrieditdowntothelittlebrookandfilleditwithclear,sparklingwater. Totoranovertothetreesandbegantobarkatthebirdssittingthere. Dorothywenttogethim,andsawsuchdeliciousfruithangingfromthebranchesthatshegatheredsomeofit,findingitjustwhatshewantedtohelpoutherbreakfast. 

           Thenshewentbacktothehouse,andhavinghelpedherselfandTototoagooddrinkofthecool,clearwater,shesetaboutmakingreadyforthejourneytotheCityofEmeralds. 

           Dorothyhadonlyoneotherdress,butthathappenedtobecleanandwashangingonapegbesideherbed. Itwasgingham,withchecksofwhiteandblue;andalthoughthebluewassomewhatfadedwithmanywashings,itwasstillaprettyfrock. Thegirlwashedherselfcarefully,dressedherselfinthecleangingham,andtiedherpinksunbonnetonherhead. Shetookalittlebasketandfilleditwithbreadfromthecupboard,layingawhiteclothoverthetop. Thenshelookeddownatherfeetandnoticedhowoldandwornhershoeswere. 

           "Theysurelywillneverdoforalongjourney,Toto,"shesaid. AndTotolookedupintoherfacewithhislittleblackeyesandwaggedhistailtoshowheknewwhatshemeant.
