Hewasconcealedbythistimebehindanothertreetrunk;buthemusthavebeenwatchingmeclosely,forassoonasIbegantomoveinhisdirectionhereappearedandtookasteptomeetme.Thenhehesitated,drewback,cameforwardagain,andatlast,tomywonderandconfusion,threwhimselfonhiskneesandheldouthisclaspedhandsinsupplication.

Icouldnowseethathewasawhitemanlikemyselfandthathisfeatureswereevenpleasing.Hisskin,whereveritwasexposed,wasburntbythesun;evenhislipswereblack,andhisfaireyeslookedquitestartlinginsodarkaface.Ofallthebeggar-menthatIhadseenorfancied,hewasthechiefforraggedness.Hewasclothedwithtattersofoldship’scanvasandoldsea-cloth,andthisextraordinarypatchworkwasallheldtogetherbyasystemofthemostvariousandincongruousfastenings,brassbuttons,bitsofstick,andloopsoftarrygaskin.Abouthiswaistheworeanoldbrass-buckledleatherbelt,whichwastheonethingsolidinhiswholeaccoutrement.
"Threeyears!"Icried."Wereyoushipwrecked?"
"Nay,mate,"saidhe;"marooned."
Ihadheardtheword,andIknewitstoodforahorriblekindofpunishmentcommonenoughamongthebuccaneers,inwhichtheoffenderisputashorewithalittlepowderandshotandleftbehindonsomedesolateanddistantisland.
