           Itwasabouthalfpastone—threebellsintheseaphrase—thatthetwoboatswentashorefromtheHispaniola.Thecaptain,thesquire,andIweretalkingmattersoverinthecabin.Hadtherebeenabreathofwind,weshouldhavefallenonthesixmutineerswhowereleftaboardwithus,slippedourcable,andawaytosea.Butthewindwaswanting;andtocompleteourhelplessness,downcameHunterwiththenewsthatJimHawkinshadslippedintoaboatandwasgoneashorewiththerest.

           ItneveroccurredtoustodoubtJimHawkins,butwewerealarmedforhissafety.Withthemeninthetempertheywerein,itseemedanevenchanceifweshouldseetheladagain.Weranondeck.Thepitchwasbubblingintheseams;thenastystenchoftheplaceturnedmesick;ifeveramansmeltfeveranddysentery,itwasinthatabominableanchorage.Thesixscoundrelsweresittinggrumblingunderasailintheforecastle;ashorewecouldseethegigsmadefastandamansittingineach,hardbywheretheriverrunsin.Oneofthemwaswhistling"Lillibullero."
