Itwenttoallourhearts,Ithink,toleavetheminthatwretchedstate;butwecouldnotriskanothermutiny;andtotakethemhomeforthegibbetwouldhavebeenacruelsortofkindness.Thedoctorhailedthemandtoldthemofthestoreswehadleft,andwheretheyweretofindthem.Buttheycontinuedtocallusbynameandappealtous,forGod’ssake,tobemercifulandnotleavethemtodieinsuchaplace.
Atlast,seeingtheshipstillboreonhercourseandwasnowswiftlydrawingoutofearshot,oneofthem—Iknownotwhichitwas—leapttohisfeetwithahoarsecry,whippedhismuskettohisshoulder,andsentashotwhistlingoverSilver’sheadandthroughthemain-sail.
Afterthat,wekeptundercoverofthebulwarks,andwhennextIlookedouttheyhaddisappearedfromthespit,andthespititselfhadalmostmeltedoutofsightinthegrowingdistance.Thatwas,atleast,theendofthat;andbeforenoon,tomyinexpressiblejoy,thehighestrockofTreasureIslandhadsunkintotheblueroundofsea.
Weweresoshortofmenthateveryoneonboardhadtobearahand—onlythecaptainlyingonamattressinthesternandgivinghisorders,forthoughgreatlyrecoveredhewasstillinwantofquiet.WelaidherheadforthenearestportinSpanishAmerica,forwecouldnotriskthevoyagehomewithoutfreshhands;andasitwas,whatwithbafflingwindsandacoupleoffreshgales,wewereallwornoutbeforewereachedit.
Itwasjustatsundownwhenwecastanchorinamostbeautifulland-lockedgulf,andwereimmediatelysurroundedbyshoreboatsfullofNegroesandMexicanIndiansandhalf-bloodssellingfruitsandvegetablesandofferingtodiveforbitsofmoney.
