Atalltreewasthustheprincipalmark.Now,rightbeforeustheanchoragewasboundedbyaplateaufromtwotothreehundredfeethigh,adjoiningonthenorththeslopingsouthernshoulderoftheSpy-glassandrisingagaintowardsthesouthintotherough,cliffyeminencecalledtheMizzen-mastHill.Thetopoftheplateauwasdottedthicklywithpine-treesofvaryingheight.Everyhereandthere,oneofadifferentspeciesrosefortyorfiftyfeetclearaboveitsneighbours,andwhichofthesewastheparticular"talltree"ofCaptainFlintcouldonlybedecidedonthespot,andbythereadingsofthecompass.
Yet,althoughthatwasthecase,everymanonboardtheboatshadpickedafavouriteofhisownerewewerehalf-wayover,LongJohnaloneshrugginghisshouldersandbiddingthemwaittilltheywerethere.
Wepulledeasily,bySilver’sdirections,nottowearythehandsprematurely,andafterquitealongpassage,landedatthemouthofthesecondriver—thatwhichrunsdownawoodycleftoftheSpy-glass.Thence,bendingtoourleft,webegantoascendtheslopetowardstheplateau.
