"Well,ifyouwould,you’rethefirstonethatever‘liked’toseeher,"mutteredthegirlunderherbreath; butPollyannadidnothearthis. Thegirlhadturnedandwasleadingthewaythroughthehalltoadoorattheendofit. Inthesick-room,afterthegirlhadusheredherinandclosedthedoor,Pollyannablinkedalittlebeforeshecouldaccustomhereyestothegloom. Thenshesaw,dimlyoutlined,awomanhalf-sittingupinthebedacrosstheroom. Pollyannaadvancedatonce.
"Howdoyoudo,Mrs.Snow? AuntPollysaysshehopesyouarecomfortableto-day,andshe’ssentyousomecalf’s-footjelly."
"Dearme! Jelly?"murmuredafretfulvoice. "OfcourseI’mverymuchobliged,butIwashoping‘twouldbelambbrothto-day."
Pollyannafrownedalittle.
"Why,IthoughtitwasCHICKENyouwantedwhenfolksbroughtyoujelly,"shesaid.
"What?" Thesickwomanturnedsharply.
"Why,nothing,much,"apologizedPollyanna,hurriedly; "andofcourseitdoesn’treallymakeanydifference. It’sonlythatNancysaiditwaschickenyouwantedwhenwebroughtjelly,andlambbrothwhenwebroughtchicken—butmaybe‘twastheotherway,andNancyforgot."
Thesickwomanpulledherselfuptillshesaterectinthebed—amostunusualthingforhertodo,thoughPollyannadidnotknowthis.
"Well,MissImpertinence,whoareyou?"shedemanded.
Pollyannalaughedgleefully.
"Oh,THATisn’tmyname,Mrs.Snow—andI’msoglad‘tisn’t,too! Thatwouldbeworsethan‘Hephzibah,’wouldn’tit? I’mPollyannaWhittier,MissPollyHarrington’sniece,andI’vecometolivewithher. That’swhyI’mherewiththejellythismorning." Allthroughthefirstpartofthissentence,thesickwomanhadsatinterestedlyerect; butatthereferencetothejellyshefellbackonherpillowlistlessly.
