           AsthewarmAugustdayspassed,PollyannawentveryfrequentlytothegreathouseonPendletonHill. Shedidnotfeel,however,thathervisitswerereallyasuccess. Notbutthatthemanseemedtowanthertherehesentforher,indeed,frequently; butthatwhenshewasthere,heseemedscarcelyanythehappierforherpresenceatleast,soPollyannathought. 

           Hetalkedtoher,itwastrue,andheshowedhermanystrangeandbeautifulthingsbooks,pictures,andcurios. Buthestillfrettedaudiblyoverhisownhelplessness,andhechafedvisiblyundertherulesand"regulatings"oftheunwelcomemembersofhishousehold. Hedid,indeed,seemtoliketohearPollyannatalk,however,andPollyannatalked,Pollyannalikedtotalkbutshewasneversurethatshewouldnotlookupandfindhimlyingbackonhispillowwiththatwhite,hurtlookthatalwayspainedher; andshewasneversurewhichifanyofherwordshadbroughtitthere. Asfortellinghimthe"gladgame,"andtryingtogethimtoplayitPollyannahadneverseenthetimeyetwhenshethoughthewouldcaretohearaboutit. Shehadtwicetriedtotellhim; butneithertimehadshegotbeyondthebeginningofwhatherfatherhadsaidJohnPendletonhadoneachoccasionturnedtheconversationabruptlytoanothersubject. 

           PollyannaneverdoubtednowthatJohnPendletonwasherAuntPolly’sone-timelover; andwithallthestrengthofherloving,loyalheart,shewishedshecouldinsomewaybringhappinessintotheirtohermindmiserablylonelylives.
