           OnebyonetheshortwinterdayscameandwentbuttheywerenotshorttoPollyanna. Theywerelong,andsometimesfullofpain. Veryresolutely,thesedays,however,Pollyannawasturningacheerfulfacetowardwhatevercame. Wasshenotspeciallyboundtoplaythegame,nowthatAuntPollywasplayingit,too? AndAuntPollyfoundsomanythingstobegladabout! ItwasAuntPolly,too,whodiscoveredthestoryonedayaboutthetwopoorlittlewaifsinasnow-stormwhofoundablown-downdoortocrawlunder,andwhowonderedwhatpoorfolksdidthatdidn’thaveanydoor! AnditwasAuntPollywhobroughthometheotherstorythatshehadheardaboutthepooroldladywhohadonlytwoteeth,butwhowassogladthatthosetwoteeth"hit"! 

           Pollyannanow,likeMrs.Snow,wasknittingwonderfulthingsoutofbrightcoloredworstedsthattrailedtheircheerylengthsacrossthewhitespread,andmadePollyannaagainlikeMrs.Snowsogladshehadherhandsandarms,anyway. 

           Pollyannasawpeoplenow,occasionally,andalwaystherewerethelovingmessagesfromthoseshecouldnotsee; andalwaystheybroughthersomethingnewtothinkaboutandPollyannaneedednewthingstothinkabout. 

           OnceshehadseenJohnPendleton,andtwiceshehadseenJimmyBean. JohnPendletonhadtoldherwhatafineboyJimmywasgettingtobe,andhowwellhewasdoing. Jimmyhadtoldherwhatafirst-ratehomehehad,andwhatbang-up"folks"Mr.Pendletonmade; andbothhadsaidthatitwasallowingtoher. "Whichmakesmeallthegladder,youknow,thatIHAVEhadmylegs,"Pollyannaconfidedtoherauntafterwards.
