           Theywerealldressedalike,andinthefashionwhichinthatdayprevailedamongserving-menand‘prenticesthatistosay,eachhadonthecrownofhisheadaflatblackcapaboutthesizeofasaucer,whichwasnotusefulasacovering,itbeingofsuchscantydimensions,neitherwasitornamental;frombeneathitthehairfell,unparted,tothemiddleoftheforehead,andwascroppedstraightaround;aclericalbandattheneck;abluegownthatfittedcloselyandhungaslowasthekneesorlower;fullsleeves;abroadredbelt;brightyellowstockings,garteredabovetheknees;lowshoeswithlargemetalbuckles.Itwasasufficientlyuglycostume.

           Theboysstoppedtheirplayandflockedabouttheprince,whosaidwithnativedignity

           "Goodlads,saytoyourmasterthatEdwardPrinceofWalesdesirethspeechwithhim."

           Agreatshoutwentupatthis,andonerudefellowsaid

           "Marry,artthouhisgrace’smessenger,beggar?"

           Theprince’sfaceflushedwithanger,andhisreadyhandflewtohiship,buttherewasnothingthere.Therewasastormoflaughter,andoneboysaid

           "Didstmarkthat?Hefanciedhehadaswordbelikeheistheprincehimself."

           Thissallybroughtmorelaughter.PoorEdwarddrewhimselfupproudlyandsaid

           "Iamtheprince;anditillbeseemethyouthatfeeduponthekingmyfather’sbountytousemeso."
