TheKingentered,andpaused.Thehermitturnedapairofgleaming,unrestfuleyesuponhim,andsaid—

"IamtheKing,"cametheanswer,withplacidsimplicity.
"Welcome,King!"criedthehermit,withenthusiasm.Then,bustlingaboutwithfeverishactivity,andconstantlysaying,"Welcome,welcome,"hearrangedhisbench,seatedtheKingonit,bythehearth,threwsomefaggotsonthefire,andfinallyfelltopacingthefloorwithanervousstride.
"Welcome!Manyhavesoughtsanctuaryhere,buttheywerenotworthy,andwereturnedaway.ButaKingwhocastshiscrownaway,anddespisesthevainsplendoursofhisoffice,andclotheshisbodyinrags,todevotehislifetoholinessandthemortificationoftheflesh—heisworthy,heiswelcome!—hereshallheabideallhisdaystilldeathcome."TheKinghastenedtointerruptandexplain,butthehermitpaidnoattentiontohim—didnotevenhearhim,apparently,butwentrightonwithhistalk,witharaisedvoiceandagrowingenergy."Andthoushaltbeatpeacehere.NoneshallfindoutthyrefugetodisquiettheewithsupplicationstoreturntothatemptyandfoolishlifewhichGodhathmovedtheetoabandon.
