"Ican'tgoon,"hewasraving. "Ican'tgoon.Threehundredthousand,fourhundredthousand!Thehugemultitude!Cheated!Allmylifeitmaytakeme! ...Patience!Patienceindeed!...Fool!fool!"
Therewasanoiseofhobnailsonthebricksinthebar,andMrs.Hallhadveryreluctantlytoleavetherestofhissoliloquy. Whenshereturnedtheroomwassilentagain,saveforthefaintcrepitationofhischairandtheoccasionalclinkofabottle. Itwasallover;thestrangerhadresumedwork.

"I'lltellyousomething,"saidFearenside,mysteriously. Itwaslateintheafternoon,andtheywereinthelittlebeer-shopofIpingHanger.
"Well?"saidTeddyHenfrey.
