WhenMrs.Halltookhisdinnerintohim,hewasalreadysoabsorbedinhiswork,pouringlittledropsoutofthebottlesintotest-tubes,thathedidnothearheruntilshehadsweptawaythebulkofthestrawandputthetrayonthetable,withsomelittleemphasisperhaps,seeingthestatethatthefloorwasin. Thenhehalfturnedhisheadandimmediatelyturneditawayagain. Butshesawhehadremovedhisglasses;theywerebesidehimonthetable,anditseemedtoherthathiseyesocketswereextraordinarilyhollow. Heputonhisspectaclesagain,andthenturnedandfacedher. Shewasabouttocomplainofthestrawonthefloorwhenheanticipatedher.
