Hestudieditintentlyforamoment,thentookacarefulgripwithhisteethandstartedoffdownthestream, partlycarrying,partlydraggingtheporcupine,withheadturnedtothesidesoastoavoidsteppingonthepricklymass. Herecollectedsomething,droppedtheburden,andtrottedbacktowherehehadlefttheptarmigan. Hedidnothesitateamoment. Heknewclearlywhatwastobedone,andthishedidbypromptlyeatingtheptarmigan. Thenhereturnedandtookuphisburden.
Whenhedraggedtheresultofhisday’shuntintothecave,theshe-wolfinspectedit,turnedhermuzzletohim,andlightlylickedhimontheneck. Butthenextinstantshewaswarninghimawayfromthecubswithasnarlthatwaslessharshthanusual andthatwasmoreapologeticthanmenacing. Herinstinctivefearofthefatherofherprogenywastoningdown.
