Thenshefelltobackingawayandsneezing, hernosebristlingwithquillslikeamonstrouspin-cushion. Shebrushedhernosewithherpaws,tryingtodislodgethefierydarts, thrustitintothesnow,andrubbeditagainsttwigsandbranches, andallthetimeleapingabout,ahead,sidewise,upanddown,inafrenzyofpainandfright.
Shesneezedcontinually,andherstubofatailwasdoingitsbesttowardlashingaboutbygivingquick,violentjerks. Shequitherantics,andquieteddownforalongminute. OneEyewatched. Andevenhecouldnotrepressastartandaninvoluntarybristlingofhairalonghisbackwhenshesuddenlyleaped,withoutwarning,straightupintheair, atthesametimeemittingalongandmostterriblesquall. Thenshesprangaway,upthetrail,squallingwitheveryleapshemade.
ItwasnotuntilherrackethadfadedawayinthedistanceanddiedoutthatOneEyeventuredforth. Hewalkedasdelicatelyasthoughallthesnowwerecarpetedwithporcupinequills,erectandreadytopiercethesoftpadsofhisfeet. Theporcupinemethisapproachwithafurioussquealingandaclashingofitslongteeth. Ithadmanagedtorollupinaballagain,butitwasnotquitetheoldcompactball; itsmusclesweretoomuchtornforthat. Ithadbeenrippedalmostinhalf,andwasstillbleedingprofusely.
