           Fortwodaystheshe-wolfandOneEyehungabouttheIndiancamp. Hewasworriedandapprehensive,yetthecampluredhismateandshewasloathtodepart. Butwhen,onemorning,theairwasrentwiththereportofariflecloseathand, andabulletsmashedagainstatreetrunkseveralinchesfromOneEye’shead, theyhesitatednomore,butwentoffonalong,swinginglope thatputquickmilesbetweenthemandthedanger. 

           Theydidnotgofaracoupleofdays’journey. Theshe-wolf’sneedtofindthethingforwhichshesearchedhadnowbecomeimperative. Shewasgettingveryheavy,andcouldrunbutslowly. Once,inthepursuitofarabbit,whichsheordinarilywouldhavecaughtwithease, shegaveoverandlaydownandrested. OneEyecametoher; butwhenhetouchedherneckgentlywithhismuzzleshesnappedathimwithsuchquickfiercenessthathetumbledoverbackward andcutaridiculousfigureinhisefforttoescapeherteeth. Hertemperwasnowshorterthanever; buthehadbecomemorepatientthaneverandmoresolicitous.
