Mattitwaswhotriedtoputhimintotheharnessandmakehimhaulsledwiththeotherdogs. ButMattfailed.ItwasnotuntilWeedonScottputtheharnessonWhiteFangandworkedhim,thatheunderstood. Hetookitashismaster’swillthatMattshoulddrivehimandworkhimjustashedroveandworkedhismaster’sotherdogs.
DifferentfromtheMackenzietoboggansweretheKlondikesledswithrunnersunderthem. Anddifferentwasthemethodofdrivingthedogs. Therewasnofan-formationoftheteam.Thedogsworkedinsinglefile,onebehindanother,haulingondoubletraces. Andhere,intheKlondike,theleaderwasindeedtheleader. Thewisestaswellasstrongestdogwastheleader,andtheteamobeyedhimandfearedhim. ThatWhiteFangshouldquicklygainthispostwasinevitable. Hecouldnotbesatisfiedwithless,asMattlearnedaftermuchinconvenienceandtrouble. WhiteFangpickedoutthepostforhimself,andMattbackedhisjudgmentwithstronglanguageaftertheexperimenthadbeentried. But,thoughheworkedinthesledintheday,WhiteFangdidnotforegotheguardingofhismaster’spropertyinthenight. Thushewasondutyallthetime,evervigilantandfaithful,themostvaluableofallthedogs.
