           GreyBeaverlookedonstolidlywhilethewhitemanwieldedthewhip. Hegavenoprotection. Itwasnolongerhisdog. WhenthebeatingwasoverWhiteFangwassick. Asoftsouthlanddogwouldhavediedunderit,butnothe. Hisschooloflifehadbeensterner,andhewashimselfofsternerstuff. Hehadtoogreatvitality.Hisclutchonlifewastoostrong. Buthewasverysick. Atfirsthewasunabletodraghimselfalong,andBeautySmithhadtowaithalf-an-hourforhim. Andthen,blindandreeling,hefollowedatBeautySmith’sheelsbacktothefort.
