ButWhiteFang’sreprisalsdidnotcease,evenwhentheyoungdogshadlearnedthoroughlythattheymuststaytogether. Heattackedthemwhenhecaughtthemalone,andtheyattackedhimwhentheywerebunched. Thesightofhimwassufficienttostartthemrushingafterhim,atwhichtimeshisswiftnessusuallycarriedhimintosafety. Butwoethedogthatoutranhisfellowsinsuchpursuit! WhiteFanghadlearnedtoturnsuddenlyuponthepursuerthatwasaheadofthepackandthoroughlytoriphimupbeforethepackcouldarrive. Thisoccurredwithgreatfrequency,for,onceinfullcry,thedogswerepronetoforgetthemselvesintheexcitementofthechase,whileWhiteFangneverforgothimself. Stealingbackwardglancesasheran,hewasalwaysreadytowhirlaroundanddowntheoverzealouspursuerthatoutranhisfellows.
Youngdogsareboundtoplay,andoutoftheexigenciesofthesituationtheyrealisedtheirplayinthismimicwarfare. ThusitwasthatthehuntofWhiteFangbecametheirchiefgame—adeadlygame,withal,andatalltimesaseriousgame. He,ontheotherhand,beingthefastest-footed,wasunafraidtoventureanywhere. Duringtheperiodthathewaitedvainlyforhismothertocomeback,heledthepackmanyawildchasethroughtheadjacentwoods.
