ForaysofthiskindarenotunfrequentamongtheTexanIndians.Theyaremadeonprivateaccount—oftenwithouttheknowledgeofthechief,oreldersofthetribe—justasanambitiousyoungmid,orensign,maystealoffwithascoreofcompanionsfromsquadronorcamp,tocutoutanenemy’scraft,orcapturehispicketguard.ThesemaraudsareusuallymadebyyoungIndiansoutonahuntingparty,whowishtoreturnhomewithsomethingtoshowbesidesthespoilsofthechase;andthemajorityofthetribeisoftenignorantofthemtilllongaftertheevent.Otherwise,theymightbeinterdictedbytheelders;who,asageneralthing,areaversetosuchfilibusteringexpeditions—deemingthemnotonlyimprudent,butofteninjurioustotheinterestsofthecommunity.Onlywhensuccessfularetheyapplauded.
OnthepresentoccasionseveralyoungComancheshadtakenouttheirwar-diploma,bycarryingbackwiththemthescalpsofanumberofwhitewomenandboys.Thehorsesandhornedcattlewerealsocollected;butthese,beinglessconvenientoftransportthanthelightscalp-locks,hadbeenrecaptured.
