LouisePoindexterhadimbibedapassionthatcouldnotbeeasilystifled.Thoughofbriefexistence,ithadbeenofrapidgrowth—vigorouslyoverridingallobstaclestoitsindulgence.Itwasalreadystrongenoughtoovercomesuchordinaryscruplesasparentalconsent,ortheinequalityofrank;and,haditbeenreciprocated,neitherwouldhavestoodintheway,sofarassheherselfwasconcerned.Fortheformer,shewasofage;andfelt—asmostofhercountrywomendo—capableoftakingcareofherself.Forthelatter,whoeverreallylovedthatcaredastrawforclass,orcaste?Lovehasnosuchmeannessinitscomposition.Atallevents,therewasnonesuchinthepassionofLouisePoindexter.
Itcouldscarcebecalledthefirstillusionofherlife.Itwas,however,thefirst,wheredisappointmentwaslikelytoprovedangeroustothetranquillityofherspirit.
Shewasnotunawareofthis.Sheanticipatedunhappinessforawhile—hopingthattimewouldenablehertosubduetheexpectedpain.
