Withtheexceptionoftheladies,almosteveryonewhohadtakenpartintheexpeditionseemedtothinkthatahalf-hourspentatthe"RoughandReady"wasnecessaryasa"nightcap"beforeretiringtorest;andastheDutchclock,quaintlytickingamongthecoloureddecanters,indicatedthehourofeleven,oneafteranother—officersoftheFort—planterslivingnearalongtheriver—Sutlers—commissariatcontractors—"sportsmen"—andotherswhomightbecallednondescripts—camedroppingin;eachasheenteredmarchingstraightuptothecounter,callingforhisfavouritedrink,andthenfallingbacktoconversewithsomegroupalreadyoccupyingthefloor.
Oneofthesegroupswasconspicuous.Itconsistedofsomeeightortenindividuals,halfoftheminuniform.Amongthelatterwerethethreeofficersalreadyintroduced;thecaptainofinfantry,andthetwolieutenants—Hancockofthedragoons,andCrossmanofthemountedrifles.
Alongwiththesewasanofficerolderthananyofthem,alsohigherinauthority,ascouldbetoldbytheembroideryonhisshoulder-strap,thatproclaimedhimoftherankofmajor.Ashewastheonly"fieldofficer"atFortInge,itisunnecessarytosayhewasthecommandantofthecantonment.
Thesegentlemenwereconversingasfreelyasifallweresubalternsofequalrank—thesubjectofthediscoursebeingtheincidentsoftheday.
