1. The Girl in the Chicken Coop
Thebottomofthecoopwasmadeofthickboards,soDorothyfoundshewasclingingtoasortofraft,withsidesofslats,whichreadilyboreupherweight.Aftercoughingthewateroutofherthroatandgettingherbreathagain,shemanagedtoclimbovertheslatsandstanduponthefirmwoodenbottomofthecoop,whichsupportedhereasilyenough.
"Why,I’vegotashipofmyown!"shethought,moreamusedthanfrightenedathersuddenchangeofcondition;andthen,asthecoopclimbeduptothetopofabigwave,shelookedeagerlyaroundfortheshipfromwhichshehadbeenblown.
Itwasfar,faraway,bythistime.Perhapsnooneonboardhadyetmissedher,orknewofherstrangeadventure.Downintoavalleybetweenthewavesthecoopswepther,andwhensheclimbedanothercresttheshiplookedlikeatoyboat,itwassuchalongwayoff.Soonithadentirelydisappearedinthegloom,andthenDorothygaveasighofregretatpartingwithUncleHenryandbegantowonderwhatwasgoingtohappentohernext.
Justnowshewastossingonthebosomofabigocean,withnothingtokeepherafloatbutamiserablewoodenhen-coopthathadaplankbottomandslattedsides,throughwhichthewaterconstantlysplashedandwettedherthroughtotheskin!Andtherewasnothingtoeatwhenshebecamehungry--asshewassuretodobeforelong--andnofreshwatertodrinkandnodryclothestoputon.
"Well,Ideclare!"sheexclaimed,withalaugh.
