DorothyplacedsoftcushionsinacornerforBillinaandherchicks,andhadjustreturnedtotheThroneandseatedherselfwhentheplayingoftheroyalbandoutsidethepalaceannouncedtheapproachofdistinguishedguests.

Firstwalkedagingerbreadmanneatlyformedandbakedtoalovelybrowntint.Heworeasilkhatandcarriedacandycaneprettilystripedwithredandyellow.Hisshirt-frontandcuffswerewhitefrosting,andthebuttonsonhiscoatwerelicoricedrops.
Behindthegingerbreadmancameachildwithflaxenhairandmerryblueeyes,dressedinwhitepajamas,withsandalsonthesolesofitsprettybarefeet.
